How Well Do the Genesis Creation Story and Evolution Align?

Introduction

Incredibly well is the answer. This post will break down the Bible’s Genesis creation story of Adam and Eve by examining its elements and comparing them to evolution theory appropriately. Before getting to that, the next section gives a brief explanation of what evolution is for anyone unfamiliar with it. The Genesis creation story is in Genesis chapters 1 and 2.

What Is Evolution?

The phrase “survival of the fittest” is a quick way to summarize what evolution theory is. The following two simple examples will illustrate what that is. If a fish and a rhinoceros are dropped into the middle of the ocean, the fish is fit to survive so they do, and the rhinoceros is not so they drown. If a bird and a hippopotamus are dropped from a high cliff, the bird is fit to survive so they do, and the hippopotamus is not so they die from impact. In practical terms, the survival of the fittest concept applies to species in their natural environments, dealing with a variety of factors. The examples above are more experimental than natural, used for the purpose of explaining.

Charles Darwin, responsible for evolution theory, has a more practical example using the beaks of finches based on his observations of them on the Galapagos Islands. His discovery was the physical variation of beaks on the same finch species based on their food source specific to their location. He concluded the finches’ beaks evolved so they could eat and not die of starvation. He calls this process “natural selection”. “Survival of the fittest” is more so a phrase born out of the process of natural selection and ultimately sums up what it is. The physical evolutionary changes of species are a slow process that can vary in time (ex. thousands or millions of years).

Genesis Creation Story

God Creates Adam

then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7

Adam is created on the sixth day of creation. What’s important to note here is the days of creation are phases and the length of them is uncertain.

The Days of Creation in Genesis Are Phases and Light

Evolution believes species evolve over a long period of time and that humans evolved from an ape-like species. In Genesis, the animals are created on the sixth day too, but prior to the creation of man (Ge 1:24, 26-27). So with the animals being created prior to the human species and the length of the phase being an unspecified length of time, humans evolving from an ape-like species is completely possible.

The amount of time from when God starts the creation of Adam from dust to the point where he breathes in his nostrils is uncertain. But a reasonable conclusion can be made he wasn’t human until he received God’s breath. The question arises, what was he before that? The realm of possibility of him being a less evolved species becomes all the more likely. It makes sense it would be from a species with DNA similar to humans, so the ape-like species becomes the likely species, which science assumes based on research.

Additionally, the actual starting of the process of creating man is in the third phase (Ge 1:9-13, 2:5-7), which alludes a long process. That appears clear from looking at the referenced verses. Chapter 1 says the earth is formed and brings forth plants and trees on the third day. Chapter 2 says when there was no plant or bush in the field due to God not causing rain and no man to work the ground, that’s when he formed man from dust from the ground. This would be the time period of the third phase. Note in Ge 2:4 “these are the generations”, that what’s being talked about spans over multiple phases.

God creates Adam from the dust of the earth (Ge 2:7), and likewise animals are created from the ground (Ge 1:24, 2:19). Their origin substance is either the same or very similar.

The specification of humans from dust from the ground is important to note, opposed to something happening like God landing Adam on earth from a spaceship, making him magically appear from nothing, or another idea. Rather the starting point of coming from dust makes evolution all the more likely, that the history of all his physical existence is on earth.

When a person creates something, the creation goes through many trials, errors, and tests, for the creation to come out the best it can be. Likewise, God creating humans through natural selection would make them able to survive. In this scenario, God is behind the forces of nature and this is his means of creation. His perspective and existence are different than humans, so his method of creation would likely be different. While humans are also made in his image, so there would be similarities as well (Ge 1:27).

Eve Is Created from Adam’s Rib

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Genesis 2:21-22

The creation of Adam happens outside the Garden of Eden (Ge 2:7-8) while the creation of Eve happens inside it. This is a very important distinction to make because the laws of reality are different in Eden than they are outside of it. From my understanding, being in Eden grants access to all realms and dimensions. In comparison, Adam during his creation would have existed in the 1st realm, 3D moving through 4D, which is the reality humans currently live in. I explain this in this post:

The Four Rivers in Genesis Are the Four Realms

This distinction is important because Adam is made from dust, but Eve is made from Adam. This is a fundamentally different creation process for Eve that doesn’t show traces of evolution, other than indirectly through her DNA being based on Adam’s. Adam’s rib is symbolic for his DNA which Eve’s is modeled on.

Adam’s Rib Is Referring to His DNA Helix

To say exactly what the laws of reality in Eden are is difficult without actually living in it. But based on my conclusion, there isn’t a bounding to linear movement like there is for humanity’s current reality. So rather than a long process of evolution, if that’s how God created humans, the process for making a new living creature is based on using existing DNA that has already been tried and tested.

Conclusion

The information from both the Genesis creation story and evolution theory have their limitis. The creation story is only a few pages for what is assumingly a complicated process, and there are only so much findings available for evolution theory. That said, this post does the best it can to compare the two with the information available.

While the whole picture isn’t complete, the Genesis creation story and evolution theory align incredibly well based on what’s known.
